Wind turbines are built to last 20 years. Most gearboxes fail in 7 to 10 Years. The difference? Usually not the machine. Usually the myths guiding the maintenance.
Myth 1: "Any industrial grease will do."
No. Wind turbines face shock loads, extreme temperatures, and constant vibration — all at once. Standard grease breaks down under these conditions. Over 80% of lubricants used in wind today are synthetic. There is a reason for that.
Myth 2: "More grease means more protection."
More grease means more heat. More heat breaks down the grease. Broken-down grease stops protecting. Over-greasing is one of the most common — and most damaging — mistakes on wind farms today.
Myth 3: "We change oil on schedule. That's enough."
A schedule tells you when to change oil. Not what is happening to it in between. Condition-based oil monitoring — tracking contamination, water, and viscosity — gives you 90% of what you need to catch problems before they become failures.
Myth 4: "The gearbox failed. Manufacturing defect."
Sometimes. But inadequate lubrication is one of the leading causes of early gearbox failure in wind turbines. Before blaming the machine, look at the maintenance strategy around it.
Myth 5: "Lubrication is a small part of maintenance."
Gearboxes and bearings account for over two-thirds of all wind turbine maintenance costs. A single gearbox replacement can wipe out years of savings in one invoice.
